The wine production of Basilicata is mostly famous for the Aglianico del Vulture, a DOC wine that in the recent past has also earned fame and visibility at international level.
Produced in the zone of Vulture, a thousand-year old now extinct volcano, Aglianico wine is produced by the homonym vine first introduced by Greeks around the VII century b.C., with the original name of “Hellenic”, later transformed in “Aglianico”.
Vulture is a zone of the province of Potenza where the cultivation of Aglianico grapes covers almost two thousand hectares of territory: the result is one of the most esteemed and appreciated red wines of Italy; over two million bottles appreciated in all the world.
For the production of the wine Aglianico del Vulture, the disciplinary provides for the exclusive use of Aglianico grapes cultivated between the 200 and 700 meters of altitude, with a yield per hectare not exceeding the 100 quintals, a minimum natural alcoholic content of 11,5%, and a minimum period of ripening of one year.
