Wines and Products of the region France » Burgundy

Located in the central-east part of France, along a stripe of land that descends through Digoin and Lyon, the wine growing region of Burgundy is characterised by a great parcellization of the territory cultivated with vine, with a consequent molteplicity of medium-small wine companies. Maybe more than any other in the world, this wine growing zone feels the effects of the climatic trend, opposing exceptional vintages to others definetely mediocre.

The grapevines mainly utilized for Burgundy’s wines are two: the Black Pinot for the red wines and the Chardonnay for the white wines, while of lesser value are the cultivations of white grape Aligotè, mostly utilised in the zone of Maconnais, and of Gamay red fruit grape at the base of the production of Beaujolais.

The region of Burgundy boasts 102 wines classified with the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), produced in the 5 different zones of production:
• Chablis, the northernmost region, with its great white wines that can have a very long life. The wines of Chablis are classified in the increasing order of level in Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru and Chablis Grand Cru.
• Cote d’Or, where the most famous and esteemed wines are produced. The area is divided in Cote de Nuits, that produces exceptional red wines, and Cote de Beaune, as much famous for its red wines and dry white wines, both suitable for maturation.
• Cote Chalonnaise, located south of the Cote d’Or, with white and red wines less esteemed but still of excellent level.
• Maconnais, the most extensive wine growing zone of Burgundy, mainly sworn to a production of large consumption, medium quality white wines.
• Beaujolais, where are mainly produced red wines with Gamay grape, owns in recent times its notoriety mostly to the famous Beaujolais Noveau, main artificer of the success of new wines.
