In spite of a territory extremely sworn to wine growing, the wine production of Calabria does not succeed, except in some cases, to fully express its potentials. In recent times many producers have started to utilize more modern cellar techniques, also reducing the yield per cultivated hectare, and some products begin to have a timid confirmation in the oenologic market.
The predominant wine production of Calabria is red wine, more marginal are the production quotes of white wines, rosé or dessert wines. The most cultivated grapevine in the region is Gaglioppo, which gives origin to the most famous wine of Calabria, the Cirò rosso, a very thick wine high in alcoholic content.
