Wines and Products of the region Italy » Friuli Venezia Giulia
Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region traditionally renowned for its white wines, even if in most recent times the wine market has shown a great interest for the red wines too.
The most common vines for the production of white wines are gray and white Pinot, the Tocai friulano, the Riesling, the yellow Ribolla, the Traminer, the Verduzzo and the Picolit (with which the homonym great dessert wine is produced). Regarding the red wines instead the principally cultivated vines are the Merlot, the Cabernet Sauvignon, the black Pinot and the Refosco.
From the wine’s point of view, the region is constituted by zones of production that, for being neighbours, often present strong differences due to the diversity of the terrains and microclimates.
In particular, nine are the production zones: Carso, Colli Orientali del Friuli, Collio, Friuli Annia, Friuli Aquileia, Friuli Grave, Friuli Isonzo, Friuli Latisana and Lison-Pramaggione, while Ramandolo is the only DOCG zone of the region (Controlled and Guaranteed Origin Denomination).
