Wines and Products of the region Italy
Italy challenges France for the world’s supremacy in terms of quantity of wines produced. The two countries in fact if put together produce one third of the world’s total wine production.
Wine growing in Italy is practiced everywhere, with a calculated patrimony of over 400 different variety of vines cultivated and an extraordinarily variegated list of wines. For these reasons, Italy presents a wine growing geography of difficult classification, so difficult that wines are usually divided according to the administrative region where they are produced.
Concerning the classification of the wines, the disciplinary provides for the following four different categories (in the increasing order of level):
• Table Wines
• IGT Wines (Typical Geographical Indication)
• DOC Wines (Controlled Origin Denomination)
• DOCG Wines (Controlled and Guaranteed Origin Denomination)
Some Italian producers, also prestigious, do not approve the criterias used by the legislator for the classification of the wines. A paradox has followed this very Italian controversy, of exceptional wines (like for example some “supertuscans”) produced by utilizing techniques and criterias of production such to be classified in the lowest classes of the pyramid (IGT if not even Table Wines).
