Piedmont region is, for history and prestige, one of the great wine-growing and producing Italian regions, with a world-wide reputation mostly based on its great red wines. The zones with the major wine-growing vocation are mostly concentrated in the south-eastern area of the region, close to the Apennines.
The two most famous vines are both native: while the Barbera is largely more widespread, the main vine is certainly the Nebbiolo (called Spanna in the areas of Novara and Vercelli), father of the most famous Piedmont wines: Barolo, Barbaresco and Gattinara. These wines all take their names from the towns where they are produced. Other less prestigious but very interesting red wines are Dolcetto, Freisa and Grignolino.
If red wines represent the flagship of the region, we should not forget that Piedmont also produces excellent white wines like Arneis and Cortese di Gavi, as well as famous spumanti in the zones of Asti and Monferrato, exported and appreciated in the whole world.
